Biography Resource Center

October 1, 2008

Are you still undecided about the upcoming election?  Are you skeptical about the things you hear in the news about the candidates?  Don’t fret, the library has all the resources you need to make an informed decision.  A good place to start is in the database Biography Resource Center.

For instance, if you wanted to learn more about Sarah Palin, simply enter her name in the “search by name” box and the database will retrieve the items significant to Sarah Palin.  Once your results are listed, click on a link to view the information.  You will see biographical data listed on the left, followed by a table of contents and a biographical essay.  There will be suggestions for further readings as well, which can come in handy if you need to find articles other than biographical on a famous person.

But let’s say you didn’t have a name and you needed to find articles about someone significant in a particular industry.  Biography Resource Center enables you to search through “biographical facts.” The database will give you an occupation list to choose from.  You can further limit your search by nationality and gender, among others.

I suggest this database for quick and accurate facts—the database is updated daily—and a good resource for further readings.  To use Biography Resource Center, go to the library’s homepage and select databases at the top of the left hand menu.  Find Biography Resource Center (the databases will be listed alphabetically) and click either on campus or off campus.  If you are using a computer other than a JWU computer, select off campus, and you will be prompted to enter your 14 digit bar code number on your J-card.  Remember, if you have any problems entering any of the databases you can IM a librarian during normal hours of operation for assistance.
