In addition to being an environmental disaster, the oil spill in the Gulf is affecting travel and tourism in and around our coastal areas. Potential visitors are beginning to reconsider travel to the threatened areas in anticipation of beaches being impacted. Today’s Miami Herald article Florida Tourism in Fear Over Gulf Oil Spill likens this response as similar to a hurricane threat. Florida state tourism officials face difficult decisions in how to address this issue particularly in regards to how to disseminate information to the public (and potential visitors).

I thought that the author poses an interesting question:

“As tourists mulled their summer plans, Florida’s tourism officials debated the best way to influence those decisions. The fight mirrored familiar tension that builds whenever a hurricane looms: how much information about a potential catastrophe is too much information?”

What do you think?

Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/05/05/1613588_p2/fla-tourism-industry-awash-in.html#ixzz0n4MfOLLb

Gary Bradt, author of The Ring in the Rubble, uses the metaphor of change, the kind that leaves one’s life turned upside down and in a pile of rubble, to be the time of significant personal growth and renewal.

The image of digging through a pile of rubble is used to describe the process that one goes through in order to find the opportunities that are part of any crisis. The choice comes down to staying stuck in negative emotion and attitude, or working through the pain, fear, and uncertainty to find the “golden ring of opportunity” that is hidden in each unique situation.

The author begins each chapter by sharing with the reader how he lived through a serious family crisis and thereby learned the method he shares in the book of how to persevere and find the opportunity in change. Each chapter ends with five questions that assist the reader with applying the concept discussed in the chapter and encourages the reader to dig deeper in order to grow and benefit from the process.

The purpose of the book Environmental Crime: A Sourcebook by Ronald G. Burns and Michael J. Lynch is to focus on the need for those who study crime and justice to use environmental data more. The point is made that environmental crimes not only cause damage to nature, though that in itself is significant. Estimates suggest that ten times more people die from the results of environmental crimes than die from homicide. The estimated number of victims who suffer debilitating diseases and injuries due to exposure to toxins is in the hundreds of thousands, perhaps reaching a million. The authors state that these “deaths, injuries, and illnesses are more common, and have a greater impact on the average person than ordinary crime.”

The strength of this book is that it is not only for criminal science students. The environment affects all of us. Reading just a chapter or two will raise your consciousness about why this topic is important to you.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats

Business majors often need these reports for their assignments, but they have other uses as well. Whether you are looking for a solid bank, planning to invest, or have an upcoming interview, you can quickly find a lot useful information about a company if there is a S.W.O.T. analysis available.

We now have two databases with these reports:

Business & Company Resource Center (All Campuses)
on campus | off campus

TIP: Enter the name of your company as a company search. Select the best match after looking at the company location (headquarters) and revenue. After clicking on your company, look for a DOWNLOAD S.W.O.T. link above the company name.

Business Source Complete (All Campuses)
on campus | off campus

TIP: Click on SWOT Analyses in the sidebar on the right. In the Browse for box, enter the name of your company. Click on the name of the company in the results (if there is one—there are SWOT reports for a lot of companies, but not every company has one). Under the All Issues column, choose the most recent report.
